Concert Policies and Make-Up
Please carefully read and follow all of the instructions below for making up concert absences. After reviewing all of the information below, please feel free to email me with any questions at [email protected]
A reminder from the Disclosure Document:
"Please email me about any conflicts within the first two weeks of school. With the exception of family or health related emergencies, any concert absence excused later than 1 month before a concert may not be able to be made up for full credit."
If you email me 1 month or more before the concert, you will be able to receive full points after you have done the following make-up. With the exception of emergencies, if you email me less than 1 month before, you'll be able to receive partial credit after the make-up and can do a "Responsibility Assignment" to receive the remaining credit. Please notify me of any emergencies in as much detail as possible. Thank you.

Concert Policies
For 7th Grade Choirs...
Concerts are the final celebration of learning in choir. Concerts are also final demonstrations and final exams of learning. Because of this, attendance at concerts is required. Student grades for concerts will be based on attendance (including being on time), concert attire and demonstrating performance and audience etiquette. Students who do not attend performances will receive an incomplete grade in choir. In order to pass, the concert will have to be made up.
Concert absences should be excused within the first few weeks of school. All concert dates should be compared with the family calendar. Please email me about any conflicts within the first two weeks of school. With the exception of family or health related emergencies, any concert absence excused later than 1 month before a concert will not be able to be made up for full credit. Once a concert is excused it will need to be made up. Missing a concert will result in an incomplete grade in choir for the term. Concerts can be made up by singing concert music memorized to the director, doing a personal meaning assignment and doing an extra concert report. Please see below for specific information on making up a concert.
For Audition Choirs...
Concerts are the final celebration of learning in choir. Concerts are also final demonstrations and final exams of learning. Being in an audition choir is a commitment to attend all performances. Part of being responsible is letting the director know of any conflicts as soon as possible. The following policies apply to all students in Men’s Choir, Women’s, and AF Singers.
Concert absences should be excused within the first few weeks of school or the first few weeks of notification of a concert or performance date. All concert dates should be compared with the family calendar. Please email me about any conflicts ASAP. With the exception of family or health related emergencies, any concert absence excused later than 1 month before a concert will not be able to be made up for full credit. Missing a concert will result in an incomplete grade in choir for the term. Once a concert is excused it will need to be made up. Concerts can be made up by singing concert music memorized to the director, doing a personal meaning assignment and doing an extra concert report.
The Audition Choirs have the opportunity to do additional performances outside of school. Students need to have good academic and citizenship grades to attend additional performances. It is important to remember that the choirs represent American Fork Junior High. Students are expected to demonstrate exceptional behavior and consideration.
Other performances and rehearsals may be added throughout the year. You will be notified of any schedule changes or additions by email.

Concert Make-Up
As discussed above, choir concerts are final demonstrations of learning and final assessments in choir. If you must miss a choir concert, please review the policies and dates above before continuing in this section.
Unlike other final exams, it is not possible to do a make-up exam that is the same as the original. There is no way to fully experience performing in a choir concert without being in the concert. Because of this, the make-up process for the concert attempts to cover all of the areas that will be experienced by those who participate in the choir concert.
Once again, 1 month notice of a concert absence is required for making up a concert (please see policies above). If the make-up process is begun 1 month before the concert, this should allow enough time to make up the concert for full credit before the end of the term. If the concert absence is not approved 1 month in advance, it can be made up for 80%. There will likely not be enough time for the student to make up the concert before the end of the term and the student will likely have to take and "I" or incomplete on their grade until the concert is made up.
Concerts can be made up by doing ALL of the following (Please see below for specific details): 1) singing concert music memorized to the director, 2) doing a personal meaning assignment and 3) watching another choir concert and doing a report on it. The concert make-up grade will not be entered until ALL of the above are completed and turned in.

Choir Concert Report
For part of the choir concert, attending students participate as an audience, watching the other students perform. In order for missing students to have this experience they must attend a choir concert that is a Junior High level or above. This will also allow students to experience as closely as possible some of the things that they missed in the performance part of the concert.
For a list of choir concerts in the district to attend, please see the options above (any CHOIR concert that meets the criteria above will count, but these are some options that are nearby). Recordings or youtube videos do not count as attending a choir concert.
Please remember to collect a ticket or program from the concert and attach it to the report form (please see the "Choir Concert Make-up Packet" above). Fill out the report form (remembering to fill all the lines) and turn it in along with the "Personal Reflection Assignment" (please see the "Choir Concert Make-up Packet" above).

Personal Reflection Assignment
Students who are in attendance at the concert do a self-evaluation on their concert performance the next day in class. Because missing students are not able to do this, they fill out a "Personal Reflection Assignment" in place of that self-evaluation. Please see the "Choir Concert Make-up Packet" above.
Singing Concert Music Memorized to the Director
One of the reasons for doing a concert in choir is for students to demonstrate some of the things that they have learned in choir that term. In order for missing students to demonstrate their learning, they will need to sing the memorized concert music to the director. This can be done by appointment after school (other times may be available if necessary), but may not be done the day before, the day of, or the day after the concert. Students may bring their parents to watch, or they may even find people in their class that are willing to come sing with them and help them pass off the music. The music must be memorized. Make-up points on this part of the process will be based on students singing the correct rhythms, notes and words. Please see the "Choir Concert Make-up Packet" above
